Mousumi Kar

Mousumi is a seasoned social impact and development professional with over fifteen years of experience working across India’s development sector. She has worked with leading international development organisations, including Oxfam America, UNICEF, and CARE India, contributing to programme assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, proposal development, and strategic budgeting across diverse thematic areas, including disaster management and rehabilitation programmes. 

Her work has spanned multiple states and regions of India, including West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. With a strong commitment to inclusive development and community empowerment, she has worked on initiatives ranging from nutrition and livelihoods to social behaviour change communication and grassroots capacity building.

Mousumi is also an accomplished social communication specialist, having developed documentary films, animation videos, and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials for a wide range of government agencies, non-profit organisations, and development partners. Her social communication work has supported organisations such as Kudumbashree NRO, the Panchayats & Rural Development Department of the Government of West Bengal, UNICEF, Save the Children, United Way Bengaluru, UDBHAS and several grassroots organisations.

Her documentary film on ending open defecation in Murshidabad, West Bengal, was featured under the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission, while her film on the Start-Up Village Entrepreneurship Programme received recognition at the National Rural Film Festival of India hosted by NIRDPR, Hyderabad, in 2021. She has also produced a documentary on the preservation of indigenous Australian textile traditions in collaboration with the Australian Consulate-General in Kolkata and Tata Steel.

Mousumi has been selected as one of the fellows of the prestigious Baybridges Fellowship funded by the USA Consulate Kolkata for documenting work in the Sundarbans.

Mousumi is passionate about using communication as a tool for social change, amplifying community voices, and building partnerships that create lasting impact.
